TECH: Where does your info go? US lawsuit gives peek into shadowy world of data brokers
There are a number of ways your personal data could end up in the hands of entities you’ve never directly given it to. One of them is through the data-broker industry: a complex network of companies that profits off the sale of data such as your location and your purchases, as well as biographical and demographic information. Now, a new lawsuit is giving consumers an unprecedented peek into this opaque world, and illuminating just how easily a data broker can lose control of the user information it collects.
ART: CJ Hendry – Epilogue Exhibition
This April, CJ Hendry presents her 7th solo exhibition and first show in London. Titled Epilogue, the exhibition introduces a new corpus of work comprising intricate, multi- chromatic drawings of flower petals. Showcased in a dilapidated East London church over 10 days, during which 10 tonnes of recyclable confetti will drop from the ceiling to gradually cover the grounds, Epilogue is an immersive experience exploring the ephemeral nature of beauty.
CULTURE: Rent-a-Man – Japanese Man You Can Rent to ‘Do Nothing’ Has Thousands of Clients
A man who makes a living by renting himself out “to do nothing” has garnered an enormous following online and thousands of clients. For 10,000 yen (£64) - plus expenses for travels and meals - anyone can rent Shoji Morimoto, 37, from Tokyo in Japan. He has been hired to have lunch, pose for photographs on Instagram, accompany someone filing for divorce, catch butterflies in the park and to listen to health care workers struggling with their work.Morimoto often finds that his clients don’t want to burden people they care about with their needs. He’ll just be there, with no judgement, and away from their personal space.
IN THE MARKETS: JP Morgan confirms €665m takeover of Cork’s Global Shares
Banking giant JP Morgan has confirmed a deal to acquire Clonakilty-based fintech Global Shares in a multimillion-euro deal. The deal is worth $730 million (€665 million), making it one of the largest exits by an Irish fintech.

For about a year, a couple of buddies of Los Angeles–based restaurateur Andy Nguyen had been pushing him to jump into the Web3 space, particularly NFTs. His new idea, which will launch April 9 as a 90-day pop-up in Long Beach, California: an NFT-backed fast food outlet called Bored & Hungry.
IN THE MARKETS: HSBC to close 69 more UK bank branches as Covid speeds shift online
HSBC is to shut a further 69 branches, on top of the 82 it axed last year, claiming the pandemic has accelerated the shift to digital banking. It is the latest in a line of banks to announce it is reducing its network in response to changing customer habits.
